Agricultural management software for Verdeagua Hidroponia

Rizoma (2015) is a comprehensive agricultural management software that manages full product traceability: from sowing to delivery to the final customer.

Business Context

Hydroponic vegetables in Uruguay

Verdeagua is Uruguay’s leading producer of hydroponic vegetables. They combine traditional NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) systems with automated MGS (Mobile Gully System) technology: climate-controlled greenhouses, weather stations, and daily-moving production lines. The MGS system allows them to produce 40% more volume using 25% less surface area.

Verdeagua mainly grows lettuce (90% of production), arugula, spinach, watercress, kale, and microgreens. They process in their own plant and supply McDonald’s Uruguay, in addition to chains like Tienda Inglesa and other points of sale in Montevideo. They operate with over 150 collaborators and manage GlobalGAP, HACCP, and B Corp certifications.

Beginning

Digitizing the operation

In October 2015, we started with a focused goal: to improve crop and harvest management. The first stage covered sowing, harvests, and yields.

As Verdeagua grew in collaborators, surface area, and technology, Rizoma evolved in parallel. We added the processing plant, commercial, and logistics modules. The field module expanded to cover phytosanitary applications and ensure compliance with international certifications.

What started as field software transformed into the platform that integrates the entire operation: from sowing to delivery to the client.

Work Dynamics

Rizoma Modules

Each module handles a specific area but they work integrated. Information flows in real-time between all of them, without a strictly sequential order:

How we work

Rizoma is a modular system where each area operates independently but shares information in real-time. This allows field, plant, commercial, and logistics to take coordinated decisions.

We design iteratively, in constant communication with team leaders and system operators. We started by understanding the business rules: how each team works, where the bottlenecks are, what information they need in real-time.

The design prioritizes efficient visualization of large volumes of data. The interfaces allow exploring thousands of records simultaneously with quick filters, dynamic sorting, and customizable columns. Each user configures their view according to what they need to monitor.

Evolution

Latest updates (2025)

MGS Greenhouse Management

The MGS system operates with mobile lines that move daily until harvest, unlike traditional NFT with fixed sectors. We developed an interface that reflects that movement in real-time and allows managing the entire cycle with fewer interactions (and cognitive load) than the previous system.

Business Intelligence Integration

Decision-making requires crossing operational data from Rizoma with information from other sources: weather, market, supplies. We built infrastructure to collect information from multiple sources and visualize it in an integrated way. VerdeAgua can now correlate yields with climate variables and project production based on historical data.
